A Galloping Horse (and a Giveaway!)

Today Bernie of Needle and Foot is hosting a giveaway, celebrating (yes!) our mistakes and epic fails. There are prizes to be had: a fat quarter bundle from Art Gallery, PDF patterns from Kirsty at Bonjour Quilts and Leanne at Devoted Quilter, a $30 gift certificate to Bernie's Etsy Shop, and a book from C&T Publishing! I wanted part of the fun, so I contributed two packs of Grunge mini charms. For a chance to win one of these fun prizes, click HERE to go to Bernie's post and leave a comment about your funniest goof. The event closes on Friday, April 5th and winners drawn and announced on Saturday, April 6th.

The galloping horse? My favorite credo in quilting is something my Mom used to say, "It will never be noticed from a galloping horse." It is so true, and I laugh every time I think about her saying this! However much I try to remember this, glaring errors do perturb me, so I correct as much as I can and forget the rest. Have a look at two recent ones in the photos below:

Corrected!

Log Cabin block is too big

How serendipitous that the same day after hearing about this event, I made two goofs! If you look at the two photos above you will see that in the first one I mis-positioned half square triangle corner pieces - a result of not paying attention. Second photo shows corrected block. In the third photo, I failed to follow instructions and created a log cabin block 3 inches larger than the other 12.5" inch blocks. My biggest downfall in quilting with a pattern is deciphering and following the instructions. The directions for the log cabin block were to trim to a certain measurement after every round was added. Did I even see that part? Um, no, because I didn't read the instructions all the way through before I started. That mistake is destined to become a pillow!

Grunge Seeing Stars mini charms and other prizes!

  1. Hi Linda! Awww, reading instructions are always my downfall too. Make a log cabin block - no problem! Ohh, trim in between each round - yeah, I would have totally missed that step. But a wonderful pillow front it will be! And on your first block, I still thought it looked fine even when you explained what was wrong. HAHA! I can't even say how many times I have done that exact same thing - many more than I can count. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. Love the top photo - haha! I've learned to embrace that saying as well. Reading the instructions before you start is key, but sometimes I get a little slack and read as I go. I always pay for it. Your snafu is going to make a beauty of a pillow though! Thanks for contributing to the giveaways!

  3. Well, it will be so nice to have a pillow that coordinates with the quilt you are working one!! I share your issue with not reading directions all the way through and it has bit me a number of times. Thank you for donating a prize for this fun event. You are very sweet!!

Also, forgot to say but thanks for the extra info on spray basting. I think I am going to give it a try. :-)

  4. I have had the same thing as you are describing happen so many times! I often don't notice a mistake in the block until I've taken a picture of it and I see the mistake in the picture! Sometimes you just have to laugh!

  7. I would have left the misdirection of the HSTs. But, my time in the sewing room is so limited. I just have fun with it while I'm there. Mistakes and all.

    1. Yes I could have left the mis-positioned HSTs, and I would have been the only one that noticed!

  8. Now you will have a pillow that matches your quilt! You can always pretend that was planned. At least you spotted the problem before you tried stitching the blocks together.

  9. I had to really look in order to see your mistake here. Like others have said, you will have a wonderful pillow. I totally understand how you feel when you make a mistake. Even if I get one stitch in the wrong spot in counted cross stitch it drives me crazy. I often have to leave it, but it still bugs me.

    1. Yes I understand exactly what you mean about counted cross stitch! The one I did last year was off center. By the time I realized I had messed up it was too late. :(
