A Quilt Like Dad's Flimsy #2 Finish

My daughter's "quilt like Dad's" flimsy is complete. My design inspiration was this pattern from Jedi Craft Girl. As of now it is 46" x 67" but should end up a tiny bit larger with the binding.

I think she will like the fabrics I chose, especially the plaid, which is from one of her Dad's old shirts.

Next is to make the backing from some Hobby Lobby flannel and a "Woolies" piece left over from my son's quilt backing. Then I will sandwich with "lofty" batting, hand-tie, and bind it. I anticipate another 2-3 days to finish. I have an extra day to work on it, because our kids will all be here the day after Christmas. I'll post photos of my kids with their quilts. Hopefully they'll be smiling - lol!

My husband gave me an early Christmas gift. I've wanted a wool pressing mat since I read reviews of one on Elm Street Quilts. I chose a different brand than the one Pattie reviewed. This one is by Glaciart and measures 19" x 26", and so far I am very pleased with it. Wool enables the iron to press more crisply and stay pressed. But I'll have to keep it covered so the kitties won't use it as a scratching pad!

I'll close with two collages - one of the "down-sized" decorations we do since we retired and one of my favorite ornaments. (Click on the photos for a closer view) I gave the remainder of our family collection of ornaments to my daughter last year.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

  1. I always enlarge your photos to get a good look at your fabrics. I am such a fan of fabric. This quilt looks lovely, as do all of them. I absolutely love it that you included a part of your husband’s shirt. I saved a couple of Jim’s shirts. I really need to learn how to quilt so that I can do this as well.

    1. I hope you can someday take a fun sewing/quilting class Pattie! I love fabric also and can remember collecting it from very early on in my 20s.

  2. That is so pretty, Linda! I love the design with the "stripes" at the top and bottom. It looks like a cozy and comforting quilt! Hopefully you are well on your way to finishing these quilts up to give your kids!

    1. Thank you Diann. I like the design also. :) Actually it's getting to be crunch time. I didn't get as much done yesterday as I'd hoped (Christmas baking instead) so I need to get going on it!

  3. Your kids are going to love having quilts like Dad's!! The stripe is a wonderful way to extend the length, too. And the shirt!! What a cozy way to put Dad close at hand. Your Christmas collections are delightful. I love the ornaments from your childhood. This year when we were thinking we just might not get a tree, I had thought of making a wall tree. I like how yours is made from wood. Cheerful and just right for its space. I'll be interested to know how your wool pressing mat works out over time. I just learned about them recently. (Tell those kitties to behave!) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours, Linda!

    1. Thanks so much Janine! I got the wood tree at Joann's last year and I love it, but I'm thinking of having my husband make us one for next year, since he loves to make things from wood. The kitties have already been scratching at the pad. I am going to have to cover it with a towel when it isn't in use. ;)

  4. Your quilts look good; having a quilt like dad's will make them even better. I keep hearing wood ironing pads are great and think I need to get one. Do you keep it in your RV?

    1. Thank you Marti! So far I like the ironing pad, but it's in my sewing room. I wish we had an RV! :)

  5. Oops, I think I got you mixed up with another blogger. Right before I commented, I thought I read that you were hosting at a state park for the winter, but since I can't find it now, I think I must have been reading another blog on a different tab. So much for multi-tasking.
