Thank you for all of your kind and caring comments after the events of last week. Your supportive words mean more to me than you'll ever know. Our grandson has had a rough time, as we expected. We met our son and family for dinner on Thursday to celebrate our son's 50th birthday. Because of current restaurant requirements, our party of seven had to sit at two separate tables six feet apart. So my husband and I sat separately and members of the family each came and sat with us for awhile. That was actually fun, and were able to spend some alone time with Brandon. We were glad that he talked about Prescilla and his feelings. He is a strong young man and he will be OK, and that was a big relief for us.

Prescilla's sister Audrey remains in ICU but she is improving every day. Her family is grieving but very thankful for Audrey's fighting spirit. She has not been told about her sister. A Go Fund Me page has been established for the family and over $36,000 has been raised for assistance with funeral and medical expenses. The memorial service is a week from today and will be a "come-and-go" event due to Covid-19 restrictions. The family wants Brandon with them, so that will be a long and emotional day for all. Please add them to your prayers.

Our daughter and family are coming today to spend several days and our son and family will visit tomorrow to celebrate our youngest grandson's first birthday and our son's 50th. It will likely be an emotional day but full of laughter and love. Life goes on.

During my little blogging break, I decided to work on a new blog with a name related to my username on Instagram. I think my current blog has some technical issues with mixed http and https, so hopefully the new one will be accessible to anyone who wants to comment and also that Instagram will allow me to post my website in my profile. I will have a post with a redirect address when that happens, possibly some time next week.

I hope you are planning good times for your Memorial Day weekend, and I'd love to hear all about it. Stay safe and well!Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17786068334983762178noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4925931758682187912.post-88014009479579358522020-05-16T09:42:00.002-05:002020-05-16T09:42:44.978-05:00A Beautiful Life

Yesterday, May 15, our grandson's beautiful girlfriend was in a fatal car accident and lost her life. She was 21. Our grandson is devastated, as are her parents, her siblings, and our family. Her sister, who was in the passenger seat, is in critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle drove into her lane and crashed head-on. He also lost his life.
Brandon and Prescilla met at "Fish Camp" the first week of their freshman year at Texas A&M and have been together ever since. They attended church together and went on mission trips instead of partying during spring break. They would both graduate spring of 2021, and Prescilla wanted to be a teacher. Although they were not engaged, they had plans to marry. They were so, so happy together. It is hard to find adequate words to describe how delightful and special she was. She had an unabashed faith in Christ and was the most joyful person I ever met. Our whole family fell in love with her, and our lives will not be the same without her.

This is a post she made on her Instagram account last month:

"I have a secret place that only Jesus and I know about. Where I know my heart will always be taken care of, my mind renewed, and my spirit can soak in the joy found only in His presence.
That's a reminder for me and maybe a spark for you."

I only became aware of her when Janice of Color, Creating, and Quilting posted about Paula's unexpected passing in February. Paula, who would have been 79 this year, had degrees in biology and interior design and led a varied career as a researcher, an occupational therapy aide, and a medical transcriptionist prior to becoming a prolific quilter. She was an enthusiastic, generous, and supportive blogger who often shared her antique quilt research on her blog, Paula B Quilts. Bloggers participating in this three-day blog hop made a quilt for the charity of their choice in Paula's honor. And there are prizes to be had! Please see below for the blog hop schedule, instructions for entries for prize drawings, and a list of the wonderful sponsors and their generous prizes.
Bernie began collecting quilts back in 2018 for donation to Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, CA. You can read about the reason Bernie began the quilt drive right here. I have the quilt laundered and ready to send to Bernie to be delivered to just the right recipient! If you would like to donate a quilt to this very worthy hospital, contact Bernie here!
I don't know about you, but sometimes I make a quilty decision that I regret down the road. You might recall I decided to make the January and February blocks 8-1/2 inches instead of 12-1/2 inches, in order to accommodate the size of my scraps. You may read about that decision here. Then I forgot to do that for the March block. I didn't want to redo the March block, so I added borders to bring the two previous blocks up to 12-1/2 inches, and that riveting post is here. Although I liked my do-over blocks, every time I looked at them they just didn't look quite right to me, and it finally drove me crazy enough to remake the blocks again! It's all good though, because I can still use the smaller blocks as part of the backing.
I talked my husband into going early so we could check out the store before we met them. It is a quilter's dream - clean and bright and full of beautiful fabrics! For some reason I migrated toward the long arm machines they had set up. I gave the Hand-Quilter Simply Sixteen a test drive, and oh my goodness! What a fun time I had easily maneuvering that piece of metal around. We asked the friendly demonstrator several questions before I finally asked "how much is it?" Well at $5995.95, and even with a payment plan, I decided maybe I'd just stick with my domestic Janome. And even if we could afford it, we would have to add on a room for it somewhere - lol! But oh it is fun to dream about it, especially when I'm wrestling a quilt through Miss Janome.
It was a fun "X's and O's" pattern, and I love the final look! I finished and sandwiched the flimsy last March (you may read about it here), put it in my closet, and there it stayed until last week. Because it had been folded for so long, the backing was no longer taut, so I had to re-sandwich it. That was fun (not!).
Beverly is the older sister of my best friend from childhood. She is in assisted living in my hometown and according to my friend, still leads an active life in her wheelchair. However, due to some complications from diabetes, she is currently in a physical rehab facility and hoping to get back to her home soon. In February I read about a wheelchair quilt on Louise's blog and began thinking about Beverly, and I couldn't stop thinking about her. Now that I know she is experiencing health issues, I'm glad I made the decision to gift her the quilt instead of keeping it for myself.
Most of the fabrics came from scraps or stash, but I did purchase the cornerstone and binding fabrics. My husband (and occasional quilt model) has become a surprisingly good consultant in choosing fabrics for bindings and backings, and he picked out the binding at my local quilt shop.
The inspiration for zig-zag came from this pretty quilt on Preeti's blog. If you squint, it looks a little like hand-stitching. I employed the same zig-zag on the binding. Zig-zagging is fast but it really eats bobbin thread!
The Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color for March is turquoise (or aqua or teal). Back in the early 2000s I collected aquamarine depression glass and developed a deep love for teal, aqua, and turquoise. I've sold most of it since then, but I still love it! Our kitchen and family room are decorated with aqua with touches of red and gray, and fortunately my husband likes it too!
Since I have a lot of turquoise in my stash, I assumed I would have plenty of scraps to work with this month. I was wrong! I have many blue scraps, but not so much of the colors I needed. I broke my rule of only using scraps and delved a little bit into my stash. Please don't tell the scrap police!
Last week we reorganized my sewing room, and I love the new arrangement and feel happy when I walk into the room. I have plenty of projects ready and nothing stopping me from sewing except the distraction of my mind. Myra's encouragement to "just BE" is appealing though, and I am just allowing myself to get a few things done with no pressure.
We added a flower bed to the front of the house, did a lot of trimming and raking, and added mulch to the rest of our beds. We prepped a smaller area for the vegetable garden this year. It will be roughly half the size planted last year. I started tomato seeds in milk jugs in January, used a heat mat for seedlings under them, and this week planted 18 beautiful plants! For those of you that are interested in such things, they are Black Krim, Sungold, Climbing Triple Crop, and Indigo Pear Drops. Also in the ground are Romaine lettuce, Texas Sweet Onions, pimento and bell peppers, and I have peach trees and blueberry bushes blooming. Life in the garden flourishes during self-isolation and social distancing!

My hope is that you are all safe and healthy and coping well. Since we are retired and living on 5 acres on a dirt road, social distancing has not been a major adjustment for us. It is affecting our kids work-wise, but we are all still in good health, for which we are thankful. Since my orange scraps are depleted from last month's RSC, I decided to go with the female Oriole, who has more muted gold/orange/yellow feathers than the brightly colored male. I'll be making a Scraptastic Star, string blocks, a Geese Migration block, and an Irish chain block. Hopefully that will help reduce the overflow somewhat. Before I start, I plan to use Preeti's suggestion of separating my scraps into greenish blue and bluish green! We are good to go on groceries for a few days, and with no visitors or activities scheduled for awhile I should have plenty of time to get going on scraps.
But after seeing this post by Louise at Quilt Odyssey, I decided to gift it to the older sister of my childhood best friend. Beverly is wheelchair bound but active in her assisted living apartment, and I think she might like a lap quilt. I'm reserving the name "Cottonwood" for a future quilt and renaming this one simply "Beverly's quilt". I hope to finish it this week!
If you are making a single block like the ones I made, the four-patch is pieced together to form the center of the block. I cut 2-1/2 inch squares for the solid pieces and made the HSTs with squares cut at 2-7/8 inches and trimmed to 2-1/2 inches. My block finished at 8-1/2 inches.
That happens so easily and so often! These blocks are called "Friendship Stars". I've never given friendship stars a second glance until I saw a Pam's version, in which the darker star is paired with a slightly less dark fabric instead of a strong contrast - does that make sense?
This time I chose another pattern - Geese Migration by Cynthia Brunz of Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework.
It goes together quickly once the fabrics are chosen. I had forgotten how much I love making flying geese! I would love to have taken one of Cynthia's classes on choosing fabrics for this quilt, but I'm not sure if she is still teaching them. UPDATE: Cynthia says she is teaching an upcoming class at the Roseburg Oregon quilt show in April.
Distractions are the rule here in Squirrel-ville. I'll blame this one on The Joyful Quilter whose blog I visited earlier this week. She had purchased a cute little heart mini quilt and then made one herself. The original was made by Jayne at Twiggy and Opal, who lists the Rainbow Heart Trio pattern in her Etsy shop. Before I knew it, the PDF was in my cart, and then it flew out of my printer.
I chose the large double heart.

I used darker tones and a faded-look flowery print as background for the small center heart. Then I used the same colors for the larger squares in the outer heart against a creamy blender for the background. I didn't want to distract from any of the dark red scrappy goodness, so I bound it with the same creamy blender.
The RSC2020 color for February is orange, and the above blocks are added to the Scraptastic Star and string blocks I made last month.
Last month I felt constrained to try to blend my greens on the star, but this month I felt more free. And I like the combination just as well!
The bird for February is the Indigo Bunting, and I struggled to find large enough blue scraps to make HSTs for this block. We have the option of not using scraps, but I really want to use my scrap bins this year. Finally I found a piece I thought appropriate for the blues I wanted but did not have enough of it, so I got the bright idea to reduce the size of the block from 12-1/2 inches to 8-1/2 inches. I really like the result.

I've been pulling darker shades of my stash for Friendship Stars. My inspiration was from by @pamalamajodesigns on Instagram, whose photo (see below) instantly put me on a quest to try something different. I love the dark richness of the fabrics I'm using, and I'm having fun. And having fun with a squirrel is all that matters, right?
The challenge involves a block in a different color each month, which will make good use of my scrap bins, and the color inspirations are from birds, so what's not to like?

Here is the list of each monthly color and its bird counterpart:
January yellow: Goldfinch
February teal: Indigo Bunting
March orange: Oriole
April purple: Honey Creeper
May green: Budgerigar
June blue: Blue Bird
July rust: American Robin
August pink: Flamingo
September cinnamon: Cinnamon Teal
October olive: Ruby-crowned Kinglet
November buff: Buff-breasted Sandpiper
December red: Cardinal

The January block is a simple one that goes together quickly with strip piecing, unless you elect to go "scrappy", and it finishes at 12-1/2 inches. I say the pattern was simple, but as you see in my first attempt above, I still managed to place a 4-patch in the wrong direction!
When I visited Cynthia's blog the other day to link up with her Oh Scrap!, I saw that she had made green string blocks. In true squirrel fashion, I thought "string blocks!" and got my green scraps back out to play. Notice I said "play". In my last post I mentioned that I don't really enjoy "playing" with scraps. Well that has changed. String blocks are just fun. Another quilt in the works - just what I need (not!).

I saw a string block on Instagram with a wider strip that forms the center, so I experimented with that. I think I like any kind of string block! Both blocks are made with four 6-1/2 inch blocks sewn together for a 12-1/2 inch block.

One of the fun things about using scraps is seeing favorite fabrics I've used. This one is called Doglandia Unleashed, and I used it in my granddaughter's green quilt I made last year. January's color is "light and bright green", and green is my most sparse scrap bin! Why? I have a lot of fat quarters in many hues of green, but I usually only like green at Christmas. I really should use it more!

Although I save and use scraps, I don't enjoy "playing with scraps", but I really want to challenge myself to use more scraps instead of always reaching for yardage. After two days of struggling with what I found in my green scrap bin, I finally realized that I don't have to stick to "greens only" (where did I get that idea?) and invaded other bins for scraps with touches of green. Then I was able to put together a block using a pattern by Melissa Corry called Scraptastic Stars. The blocks finish at 12-1/2 inches, so by October I should have enough to finish up for a nice sized quilt.
I made a log cabin block from this tutorial on Cynthia's Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework blog, and that was the last scrap block I made that year! To make myself more accountable this year, I'm going to cut 2-1/2 inch strips for scrappy binding as I go, so I will have what I need to finish this quilt. I'm thinking about using this tutorial to make sashing that forms secondary stars as cornerstones.
I'm happy to report that I did achieve some of those goals plus a few unplanned goals as the year went on. You may view a thumbnail list of my "2019 "Makes" just under the blog header (or click here).

For now, instead of setting goals, joining quilt-alongs, sew-alongs, and posting monthly and quarterly goal-setting, I've chosen to list my projects in the right-side column of this blog. I have quilts to finish and quilts to start, along with cross stich, embroidery, and crochet projects; plus I'll be starting seed indoors in a few days for my spring garden . . . I'm excited about it all!
Judging by the reactions of my older (18 and 16) granddaughters when Delaney opened the gift bag with her apron, I probably need to make one for each of them too! I mostly followed a pattern, which also had an option for adult sizes. I tried adding a PDF for sharing to Google Docs, but I was unsuccessful, so just go to Google and insert the following text into the search box: "child's pdf apron pattern by joanna armour michael miller fabrics", and "Classic Reversible Apron" should appear first in the results. If that doesn't work, then just email me and I'll send you the pattern!
She likes butterflies, and I had fun choosing and coordinating fabrics from my stash. On the "front" side, I love the way the butterfly and text fabric coordinates with the text on the main fabric. On the "reverse" side are ballerinas and pink gingham, for when she feels more girlie. To make it reversible, I simply made both sides, put them together with right sides facing, stitched around the perimeter leaving about a 7-inch gap, then turned it right side out, sewed the gap closed, poked the corners out, pressed it, and top-stitched around the edges.
I associate it with my childhood in northeastern Oklahoma where we attended church service on Christmas Eve at our little white-steepled Methodist church. After singing Christmas carols, all the kids received a red net stocking filled with an apple, an orange, and ribbon candy, passed out by "Santa", the father of one of my friends. After church we would go home and get warm with hot cocoa that Mom made in a pot on the stove with cocoa and milk and sugar. I was always so excited and happy when I went to bed, anticipating the gifts that would be under the tree when I got up. After I got married and had a family, watching Holiday Inn and making and decorating my Granny's sugar cookies became some of the traditions my kids enjoyed, but I still feel the anticipation and warmth of those childhood Christmas Eves.

Here is Granny's sugar cookie recipe that my adult kids and husband expect me to make every year. According to my Mom, Granny made these all her life, so the recipe is at least 125 years old. Be forewarned, it is a tender dough that is not easy to cut and roll out, but the cookies are so, so good!

1 cup shortening
1 stick salted butter
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
4 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon soda
5 to 5-1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons nutmeg

Cream shortening and butter; add sugar and mix. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well. Mix soda into buttermilk (in a container that will hold the overflow when it bubbles!) Whisk together 5 cups flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg; add alternately with buttermilk. Add more flour as needed to make a dough that holds together. Chill dough at least two hours or overnight. Roll out on floured surface and cut into shapes; sprinkle with sugar. Bake 375 about 10 minutes. Dough freezes well. These are excellent with a powdered sugar icing.
In January she issued an invitation on Instagram to join her in making a few blocks per month from Moda Bakeshop's 2018 Countdown to Christmas. I decided to do two per month so that by November or December I should have plenty of blocks for a nice Christmas quilt. I made blocks through May then focused on other projects. The photos did not have good lighting, but hopefully you can get a good idea of the colors of red, green, pink, teal, and black.
I really enjoyed choosing from the variety of blocks on Moda's website. Because each was from a different maker, some instructions were clear and some were sparse but all were fun to make. The two blocks above were not part of Moda's choices. One of the blocks I improvised to use up some leftover squares and another was a free pattern for Nine-Patch Star from Carole at From My Carolina Home. I liked her pattern so much I may make a full quilt of those simple blocks. At the bottom of this post I have photo of my quilt with numbers on each block. You can match each block to the list that includes links to each website.
My love for embroidery continued into the early 2000s, but only until the last few years have I again picked up an embroidery needle This pattern is mostly stem stitch, and for some reason I had trouble "getting it". Once I did, things went fairly smoothly. There are mistakes for sure, but overall Buddy likes the result because it matches his collar!
Overall a fun project (although I am not fond of the stem stitch), and I'm thankful to be back in the embroidery squad.
I'm finding that I like cross stitch more than embroidery these days, maybe because my fingers aren't as nimble as they used to be. The pattern suggested 28 count cloth stitched over two, but I substituted 14 count stitched over one. This is a pattern I purchased several years ago, and I'm glad to count it in my "Done" list.
Diann at Little Penguin Quilts has beautifully made some really cute projects from that book, and so now I've put the book on my Christmas wishlist!
I carefully paired and placed those pieces on a board to transport to my closet, planning to keep it out of harm's way until I could work on it again. On the way to the closet the board hit the wall and all those pieces spilled onto the floor. I was so discouraged that I threw everything into a bag and decided to wait and finish it later. This year I found it again and sorted everything out and was excited to get it finished.
I wasn't as picky about pairing fabrics this time, but I like it just fine. The fabrics are so pretty, and it was a pleasure to chain piece and press them. The pattern consisted of 3-1/2 inch 9-square blocks.
Fruitcake is my very favorite fabric line. I bought it for my first quilting class in 2010, a table topper I finished in 2014.
